Plasma volume is the volume occupied by plasma in circulatory blood. The plasma volume is 3.5 litres.




MEASUREMENT
It is measured using substances that bind to plasma protein. They are also measured using serum albumin labelled with radioactive iodine. The fraction of the injected dye (substance) with the sample of plasma is obtained and counted, using scintillation chamber.


QUALITIES OF DYES USED FOR MEASURING BODY VOLUMES


It must not be toxic
It must not be metabolized by the body
It must mix evenly in the body fluid.
It must be relatively easy to measure
It must not have effect on the distribution of water
