11 people killed and many injured by lightening strike while taking selfies


A lightning strike killed about 11 people killed and injured many in Jaipur in northern India on Sunday, July 11th.

The victims which where said to be tourists were on top of a watchtower taking selfies when the lightning struck them. 

A footage taken from a nearby building shows how the incident happened when the bolt struck the group of tourists as they gathered to take pictures.

Some of them jumped to the ground from the top of the tower in fright. 

Anand Srivastava a Senior police officer confirmed the incident and also said that most of the people who died at the tower were young people. 

Numerous cases of lightening has been recorded recently in the Northern states of India which has claimed not less than 60 lives. 

Mr Anand narrated that about 9 people were killed and 20 others injured when the state of Rajasthan was lashed with thunderstorms and monsoon rains on different occasions. 

Also In Uttar Pradesh, 18 people were killed by lightning on Sunday, July 11th most of which were farm labourers working in fields.

The state governments out of pity for the bereft announced financial compensation for the families of the victims and also to those who were badly injured.

However Indian Meteorological Department has warned of the possibility of more lightning in the next two days and urged all citizens to take precautions and to remain indoors during rain.
