Farouk Yahaya: No mass retirement in military, says Army #Arewapublisize

The Nigerian Army has said it is not true that there will be a mass retirement in the military following the appointment of the new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya.

The new COAS was appointed on May 27 by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), following the death of his predecessor, Lt General Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in a plane crash.

Farouk’s appointment led to indications that no fewer than 25 major generals who were his seniors would be retired.

According to military tradition, the new COAS, who is of Course 37 is junior to these officers and cannot superintend over them.

Addressing the public on the issue, Brigadier General Benard Onyeuko, released a statement after the press briefing by the Directorate of Defence Media Operations held at the Defence Headquarters on June 3.

According to Onyeuko, the talks of mass retirement in the military due to Farouk’s appointment is not true.

“Retirement is only on voluntary basis for senior officers who desire to do so. At this point, no retirements have been authorized by the Military High Command,” he said.
