OnePlus 8 Pro: Full Review, Features, and Price in Nigeria

The OnePlus 8 Pro is what's considered a complete flagship device and it's the company's first approach into that segment. Undoubtedly, OnePlus is now officially one of the biggest names in the smartphone industry, thanks to the launch of this handset.

The OnePlus 8 Pro is a highly specced device that can compete with the top phones in the market. While OnePlus Nord is one of the best affordable options out there, the OnePlus 8 Pro is the most flagship specced phone from the brand this year, packing a lot of quality features including the latest 5G connectivity.

Fortunately, OnePlus equipped the best display it has ever made on the 8 Pro, and the Chinese-based brand goes as far as slapping in a QHD resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Also, there's a rear quad camera set-up providing quality photography options through its features, though they didn't hit the height of Google, Sony, or Samsung.

OnePlus has also given its fans what they deserved by equipping the 8 Pro with the highly requested wireless charging support. Amazingly, it can easily power the phone from zero to 50% in just 30 minutes. Added to that is a Snapdragon 865 chipset paired with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM.

In short, you're getting a flagship device that can comfortably compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, Huawei P40 Pro, and Apple iPhone 11.

OnePlus 8 Pro: Design

The OnePlus 8 Pro has a premium design like most flagship smartphones. The front panel is dominated by a large 6.78-inch display which slightly curves at the vertical edges. However, this makes it a little slippy to hold, thereby doesn't provide much comfortable hand grip. The phone boasts of a Gorilla Glass finish on the rear which makes it more captivating to look at and added to the premium feel of the phone. It's available in Glacial Green, Ultramarine Blue, and Onyx Black color options.

Of course, OnePlus provided a silicon case in the box that protects the camera bump protrusion. However, this detracts from the premium look of the phone, but you can still see the fetching colors of the phone. Also, it helps to protect the phone against scratches and it's highly recommended if you're a rough user.

At 165.3 x 74.4 x 8.5 mm, you'll easily notice the OnePlus 8 Pro is a large device and small hand users will find it difficult to operate with a single hand. With this size, the OnePlus 8 Pro is taller and wider than the Apple iPhone 11 Pro, Huawei P40 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus. Meanwhile, when it comes to weight, the OnePlus 8 Pro has a moderate weight of 199g.

With an IP68 rating, the OnePlus 8 Pro is fully protected against sinking in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes and total dust intrusion. Fortunately, this is the first phone from the company to have an official IP rating against dust and water.

The OnePlus 8 Pro features just one port - the USB-C port on the base. There's an absence of a 3.5mm headphone jack just like in most flagship devices. However, there's a dual-SIM tray and speaker which can be covered by your hands while gaming or watching videos especially when the phone is positioned horizontally.

On the right side of the phone is the power button which also functions as the camera when you double-press and also a long press will fire up Google Assistant. Slightly above it is a handy silenter - it allows you to easily switch between silent, vibrate, and sound-on modes. Meanwhile, the volume rockers are perfectly positioned on the left side for easy reach especially when pressing the phone with one hand.

Huawei 8 Pro: Display

One of the biggest talking points of the OnePlus 8 Pro is its "Fluid Display". There's no doubt this is the best you'll see in the market this year. At 6.78-inch, this is a QHD+ (3168 x 1440 pixels) resolution with 513ppi density and 3168 x 1440 pixels aspect ratio.

Refresh rate is a must-have spec for flagship smartphones. This is a trend that was first started by Razer phone and has since evolved that many manufacturers integrate it into their handsets. Looking at the OnePlus 8 Pro display, you'll easily notice the 120Hz refresh rate that's switched on by default, although at only FHD+. However, you can switch to the higher QHD+ resolution through the settings just like in the Oppo Find X2 Pro.

OnePlus 8 Pro: Camera Review

The OnePlus 8 Pro features one of the best camera performances we've ever seen on a smartphone. This is the first time OnePlus is equipping a quad-camera arrangement on their smartphone. Amazingly, the phone is loaded with two 48-MP Sony sensors.

At default, there's a 48-MP Sony IMX689 primary shooter which is positioned in the middle of the vertical camera arrangement. Also, there's another 48-MP Sony IMX586 ultra-wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture and 119.7-degree field of view. At the bottom is a new 5-MP color filter lens with an f/2.4 aperture. Finally, there's an 8-MP telephoto lens which enables 30× digital and 3× optical zoom on the handset.

Undoubtedly, the OnePlus 8 Pro cameras are a big improvement over last year's model's own and they produces better natural color photos with enough details. Fortunately, there's a Nightscape mode that brightens up darker pictures. However, the results aren't as good as the ones on iPhone 11 or Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, but it performs better than most flagship device cameras.

OnePlus 8 Pro: Hardware Performance and Software

There's no doubt that the OnePlus 8 Pro is the fastest device from the company, thanks to Snapdragon 865 chipset which comes with Qualcomm's X55 5G modem to enable an incredible internet speed.

This is paired by either 8GB or 12GB of RAM depending on whether you choose the 128GB or 256GB built-in storage variants. The system files occupy 20GB of the storage space which leaves you with 108GB and 236GB available storage. However, there's no SDcard support here, but the provided storage is more than enough to occupy your apps or files.

The OnePlus 8 Pro is a super-fast device and can comfortably play PUGB at the highest settings without experiencing any stutter. The dual-SIM support allows you to comfortably use two SIMs simultaneously on the phone. However, you should note that only one SIM card can connect to 5G network at a time.

With a 120Hz refresh rate, there's no doubt that the equipped Android 10 is fast and incredible to use. As usual, it runs alongside the OnePlus OxygenOS 11 interface overlay. This offers you a lot of customizable options including how to easily tinker the system's apps icons, color, fonts, and other lady through the settings menu. Of course, there's a dark mode for fans who love the aesthetic and it can extend to all of the phone's pre-installed apps.

OnePlus 8 Pro: Battery Capacity

The OnePlus 8 Pro is equipped with an average 4,510mAh battery cell, which is the biggest on OnePlus handsets. Also, it's quite bigger than the ones in iPhone 11, Huawei P40 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus. There's no doubt that the OnePlus 8 Pro can comfortably last for 24-hours on a single charge with typical normal usage.

Fortunately, OnePlus has upgraded its fast charging to 30W which in return gets you from zero to 50% in 23 minutes through a wired connection, while from zero to 50% in 30 minutes via a wireless connection.

Surprisingly, the OnePlus has included wireless charging support on its handset. This technology is called Warp Charge 30 Wireless. However, this is sold separately and will cost you an additional ₦29,000 (about $80). Fortunately, OnePlus equipped the wireless charging pad with a small built-in fan that will keep things cool during intense charging, though it makes some whirring noise.

OnePlus 8 Pro: Price in Nigeria and Availability

The OnePlus 8 Pro was officially released on April 21, 2020, and the phone is now on sale at all reputable phone outlets in Nigeria, UK, or the US. However, we're not sure whether the device will be released in Australia, but it's not available at the time of this writing.

There's no doubt the OnePlus 8 Pro is among the most expensive smartphones to date. The OnePlus 8 Pro starts at 400,000 (around $1,050) for the 8GB and 128GB storage variant. That's £100 more than the starting price of the OnePlus 7T Pro.

On the other side, the bigger 12GB RAM and 256GB storage of the OnePlus 8 Pro is pricier at 435,000(roughly $1,143). Although these are expensive price tags, it's cheaper than the starting price of most top-tier competitors like iPhone 11 (₦460,000) and Huawei P40 Pro (₦415,000).
